Breaking Soul Ties

Freedom from Ungodly and Past Relationships

Soul tie is not a term used in the Bible just like the words trinity or rapture are not biblical words but are words given to explain biblical concepts. The Bible uses the words knit and cleave depending on the translation.

The word knit comes from a Hebrew word qashar (kaw-shar') which means to tie, bind up, or join together physically or mentally. The word cleave comes from the Hebrew word dabaq (daw-bak') which means to adhere to, fasten together, and to be glued together.

Breaking soul ties is uprooting tentacles of enslaving thoughts, emotional longings, and sexual bondages to those in your past or outside of marriage. Spiritually, it is like cutting a spiritual umbilical cord and stopping the garbage that has been feeding you and keeping you connected to ungodly soul ties.

Soul ties can be either Godly or ungodly.

We can soul ties with:

·       Family Members: Now therefore, when I come to your servant my father and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad's life and his soul knit with the lad's soul,

(AMP) it will happen, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die. (KJV) (Genesis 44:30-31)

·       Leaders: So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 20:2)

·       World: Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.  Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you: Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you. (Joshua 23:12-14)

·       Spouse: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)

·       God: Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. (Deuteronomy 10:20)

·       Friends: And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own

·       Sexual Partners: What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. (1 Corinthians 6:16)

Sexual soul ties have the strongest spiritual ties because the Bible speaks of the two becoming one:

·       Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

·       Matthew 19:5-6 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? (KJV) So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." (NKJV)

·       Proverbs 6:32 But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.

·       1 Corinthians 6:16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.

The Hope: Jesus Christ

God can take even those who have been defiled through sexual and worldly involvements and restore them to innocence and purity through the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross!

How to break soul ties:

*These terms for breaking soul ties are explained in another teaching called “Steps to Freedom.”

1.     Make a list of names.

Take a moment to ask the Lord to bring to your remembrance anyone that you need to break soul ties with.  Make a list of everyone the Lord brings to mind or you think you may possibly have a soul tie with. Make sure you list all sexual partners. This includes previous spouses (even a current one if you had sex before marriage), members of the same gender, incestuous relations, molestations, rape, and any sex involving ritual or cult abuse. If you can’t remember names, write down something that reminds you of them like a place or an occasion. Involvement in prostitution may require listing a more generic term such as John Does.

2.     *Confess and *Repent of any sins leading to the soul ties.

It is vital that you confess and repent of any sins related to soul ties such as fornication, lust, pornography, adultery, homosexuality, idolatry, etc. Then receive God's forgiveness.

Example: Dear Lord, I come to you right now in the name of Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior and I confess my sins of sex before marriage. Your word clearly speaks against this and I repent for being disobedient and sinning against my body. Please forgive me. I repent of lust and following my sinful desires. It is my desire to walk according to your word and in a way pleasing to you. I choose this day to seek your will and your ways. I choose to walk away from a lifestyle of sin and walk in the righteousness you died to give me. Thank you Lord that my sins are forgiven and are far as the east is from the west. Thank you for cleansing me now Lord, in Jesus name. I receive your forgiveness and I forgive myself too.

3.     *Renounce the sin and any covenants made.

Renounce the sins and giving the enemy any footholds in your life. In addition, renounce covenants made such as tattoos, blood brothers, piercings, and spoken covenants such as wedding vows or sayings such as, "I will love you forever." Words and actions have power in the spiritual realm to bind a soul to another person.

Example: By the authority given me by Jesus Christ, I renounce the rights I gave you by sinning against the Lord. In the name of Jesus I remove the legal rights and command you to loose me and let me go! The blood of Jesus washes me clean and I stand forgiven from the accusations you have held against me. I also renounce the words I spoke to __________ when I said, “I will always be yours.” I renounce all vows we made to each other. They no longer have a hold on me in the name of Jesus.

4.     *Break the soul ties in Jesus' name.

Verbally break off all soul ties in the name of Jesus. Cut the spiritual umbilical cord and proclaim that all ties are severed and you are cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Example: Now in the name of Jesus I break, sever, and cut off all soul ties connected to me. (It can be meaningful to make physical motions around you as if cutting off invisible cords or connections around your body.) I proclaim that I am free and all soul ties have been cut off and removed from me.

5.     Tear up or burn the list.

Destroy the list as a symbol of what has been accomplished in the spiritual realm and praise the Lord.

Example: Tear up list and stomp on pieces as a symbol of putting the devil under your feet while praising the Lord for your freedom. Thank you Lord, that you have made a way by dying on the cross for my freedom. Thank you for my freedom today! Praise you, Jesus!

6.     Get rid of material items connected to a soul tie.

Gifts or items from people on your list can reinforce or hold a soul tie in place. If a person has personal gifts, love letters, or jewelry (especially symbols of covenant like a wedding ring) from a previous relationship, then it is time to get rid of them. Pray for discernment in this area.

Pray in faith and believe God! He sent His son, Jesus Christ to die for your sins and to destroy the works of the devil. Receive God’s forgiveness. Walk in your new purity. Keep your temple pure! As Jesus said, “Go and sin no more.”

Testimonies:

In one case, a man had rededicated his life to the Lord and said a former lover had recently called him wanting to get back together. He told me he knew she was bad for him, but she would continually return even after losing touch with one another. He said he had a difficult time saying no to her, and they would end up sleeping together even though he knew he shouldn’t. He showed me that he had a tattoo of her name on his back. He received great freedom after breaking soul ties with her and anointing the tattoo of her name as he broke the tie. A week later, he told me that she had called and said she was done and didn’t want to see him anymore.
