Warning
We
live in a mixed up society. We seem to sue over every little thing. I think
there should be a "too dumb to sue over" clause in the courts, that is
if something happened to you because you had no common sense, or were unwilling
to think things through you shouldn't get to sue.
People
have successfully sued because they spilled hot coffee in their laps while
driving and the cup from the restaurant did not warn that the coffee was hot.
What were they expecting? Cold coffee? They would have taken it back and
complained about it if the coffee had been cold.
I
read of a man who sued because he fell from his ladder. Apparently one leg was
on a lump of frozen horse manure and as the day warmed up so did the manure
making the ladder unstable. He won. I think the only instability here was in the
ladder operator and the court system that awarded the damages.
Another
man sued because there was no warning on a screwdriver that he stuck into a live
electrical outlet. The list goes on and on.
As
a result of such frivolous nuisance law suits, manufacturers have taken to
adding warning labels of all kinds to their products. Some make sense while
others border on the ridiculous. Here are a few samples I gathered from various
sites the internet this morning. I haven't checked them all for accuracy, but
even if they are not exactly right they make a good representative sample
I
think you get the idea. We've gone more than a little overboard.
Now
there is a time and a place for warnings. "Bridge out" is handy to
know. "Danger! Blasting area" is another good one. "Slow. Steep
hill" is probably good to know. You can probably think of many more.
Life's
operating manual, the Bible has many good warnings, including this one.
Galatians
6:7 NIV
Do
not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
There
will come a time of reckoning. We may "get away with it" for this life
but when we cross into the next all things will be revealed.
God
is patient with us, but there will come a time when He has reached the end of
his patience.
2
Peter 3:8-14 NIV
But
do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a
thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in
keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not
wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the
Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the
elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be
laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people
ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to
the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction
of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping
with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the
home of righteousness. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to
this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him.
Some
days it seems as if He is never going to come back, but we know that he is
faithful. We can use every day to thank Him for the warning that turned us to
Jesus for forgiveness. We can use every day to warn others about the eternal
consequences of their sin.
When
He returns may He find us faithful in warning others.
