November 7, 2007

Today while in our weekly ministry meeting one of the team members mentioned a phrase I had not heard in a long time. It brought to mind the first time I had heard it. As I remember it went something like this.

A little boy and his mom were sitting in front of me. the little boy was restless, fidgeting and sighing in his seat at church. He tried talking to the man next to him, but got a loud shush in response from his mom.

His mom whispered something to him and he sat still for all of a minute, then began to fidget again. He swung his feet back and forth, riffled through the pages of the Bible, tapped, wiggled and fidgeted.

His mom whispered to him again, and he sat still again, for all of a minute. The scene repeated itself several times.

Finally, he stood up and started to dance in front of his seat. Mom’s response was a little louder this time, "Sit down!"

"But mom, there’s not enough wiggle room in the chair." I almost laughed out loud at his response.

Wiggle room. We look for it in our daily lives!

Where are the gray areas?

Is there any way here to get off on a slight technicality?

Did God really say "that"?

How fast can I go above the posted speed limit without getting a ticket?

How long can I take for lunch without upsetting the boss?

We sometimes do it with God. Oh I can do it, I know that I’m forgiven, He’ll understand.

He will understand, but when we do that, we cheapen His sacrifice on the cross.

What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.                                                                               Romans 6:1-4 NIV

Perhaps it is time for us to grow up in our faith. To stop looking for wiggle room and seek maturity and obedience.

Until next time, when you feel tempted to look for wiggle room, may the Holy Spirit convict you and keep you on the right path.
